I have been using ASP and VB scripting for web development.
I want to learn how to develop professional windows and web applicaions, and I thought about using VS. Where can I find the software to dowload? (a trial version). Should I get the .NET version? Is it VS 2006 or 2008? Thanks

I am a new to web development and I have downloaded MS SQL server 2005 Express edition. I want to create a database and connect it to my dreamweaver. I know how to create databases with a query analyzer which is available in SQL Server, but I cannot find the query analyser, may be I need to configure this server in order to get that. Please could someone help me out to get started with MS SQL server and creating databases.

Well, my idea for the past couple of years was to learn a language, and get a site started. I have a really good idea that is based on ideas from sites like digg.com, and wikipedia.com (not copying at all of course, a very original idea).
I have been learning PHP and MySQL for the past year, and now in a recent Yahoo Question, I have come to find out that most big company websites do not use this language. I feel really stupid now.
I was told I should be learning ruby, perl, ruby on rails, but the most popular one is asp.net
My question (with the thought of me starting my own popular website in the near future), is which language should I persue, and if so are there any really popular programs that are almost WSYIWYG editors or something close. Btw does asp.net cost money? May sound like a dumb question but this is the first time me hearing about asp.net (not asp though).
Also, to give you some specs, I want it to be Web 2.0 (completely user driven), fresh, and looks nice, dynamic

I am a web designer and spend all my time writing in ASP.NET, this I swear is the best web development language I have come across. Pity the platform it runs on is so god-damned awful (a PC).
Recently I have been looking at an Apple Mac and can use all the software I am used to using (Photoshop, Flash, Firefox, Thunderbird etc.,) although the only sticking point is the web development platform.
Can anyone tell me what the Mac equivalent is (if any) of using Microsoft SQL Server with ASP.NET (I'm currently using SQL Server 2005 Express and ASP.NET 2.0 with AJAX extensions).
Sadie.

About to teach myself ASP.NET 2.0 and would like your opinion on which 'companion' langaguage I should learn, ie VB, C#, C++, other? Have noticed that the syntax of Flash scripting appears to be like C/C++. So for 'compatibility' with other web development tools which language should I opt for?
Key concerns are; ease of learning, availability of teaching resources, number of coders that know that langaguage, future life of language, and whether it's any 'good' for web development (open ended criteria that one I know!).
I have very little experience in any language, although have used VB, VBA and Delphi in the distant past.
Thanks in advance.

Hello Yahoo
I am in need of some advice on how to change jobs/careers out of web site design/development. I have had various temp contract jobs over the past 3 yrs and I am tired of the job security.
It seems to me that in 2007-08, with all this cheesy myspace, youtube, and user generated content, web design is a very broad term, and amateur designers with no background are using the web for crap, and on the other side their is too many languages to learn, and each back-end web project is various(php or asp.net, or joomla, or vb or c# with ruby or j2ee with sharepoint);
And alot of jobs now are very basic, (like sending out a email newsletter ) 20hrs/part time, or designer/SEO, or back end asp.net programming on some stupid intranet that gets updated every 6 months, its not even worth being a full-time employee in my opinion.
All in all, I want to know, is this type of work worth a FULL_TIME DAY job, or is it worth part-time, contract, remote projects from home?
I am sick & tired of looking for web development day jobs (and every single one has a different technical skillset; huge headache, some have a small scope (like xhtml/css markup and posting pdfs),& some have a unrealistic scope, like 5 yrs AJAX/ and GIS mapping with SQL server and high end graphics)
And moreover, how can you transfer into another line of work, when all your skills are technical/web-related? I have had a nightmare time trying to go into other fields (like sales, or finance or even customer service??
I am going insane with this, am I the only one???
Need serious professional advice. Any thoughts
