I am seriously disappointed with Vista. As a .Net guy, I've run into some problems. SQL Server Express doesn't run on Vista (but it did on XP). I downloaded the SSE Service Pack 2, and I still ran into errors. Also, my good old Access 2000 is no good, from what I here. So then I tried to download MySQL 5.0, and it didn't install, as well.

This sucks because all of the above work fine on XP. My desktop is XP, but my laptop is VIsta. It looks like I might have to dual boot XP and Vista on my laptop to continue to be productive.

However, I have been seriously considering making the jump to LAMP. I'm tired of every time Microsoft comes out with something new it screws up everything else. You think I want to pay for Access 2007 when Access 2000 was just fine for my needs?

Anybody else been perturbed with Vista as a developer?
I am using the new .NET 2.0 Bulk Loader to import data from a Fox Pro table into SQL 2000. This worked when both were local. But when trying to import Fox Pro data on a server, the error message tells me it cannot find the file. I am sure it is a permissions error. Does anyone know how to pass credentials or does anyone know under what id the Bulk Loader would be trying to ge this data?
If I run any CDO tasks on one system, I get errors that I cannot connect to the outgoing SMTP server. But if I run the exact same command on another system, the task executes flawlessly. I recently re-installed SQL Enterprise Manager, but no luck. Is there something with my authentication or could it be an old DLL file somewhere? The exact error is:
Error Desc: Error Code: 0
Error Source: CDO.Message.1
Error Desc: The Transport Failed to connect to the server.
Error on line 1
I am 9 years experienced Systems admin also managing databases for different client/server based applications. Recently I've done MCDBA and my company needs more proficient in MS SQL 2000. Though I am already doing DBA job but want to be specific in Database Admintration and want to switch or promote to Datbase Adminitrator Designation instead of Systems Admin. Can you please help me what exactly should I concentrate more to have my goal achieve which let me have my goal achieved in job prospect and I could also be more relieable person for my company. I would expect answer most likely in which kind of duties and what type responsibilite I need to take care.
Experts/Expereinced opinion will be great for career choice...Thanks A lot..
Complete setup is 2 servers one running 2003 one running 2000 & sql/iis plus three desktops and one laptop all wireless, I'd rather have a client on the workstations rather than put everything through one of the servers
I'm am using this SQL statement on my .asp (classic) page to order records by their server name:

SELECT *
FROM ProdServers
ORDER BY Server Name / OS / DNS Alias

But it is returning these two errors:

When I click test (ultradev):

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression 'Server Name / DNS Alias'

When I try and test it on the server I get this error

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14'

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression 'Server Name / OS / DNS Alias'.

/SORTTESTprod_servers.asp, line 10

It doesn't make any sense that it wants line 10 because:
ecordset1.Open() ??

What are your thoughts?

Oh, I'm using a Microsoft 2000 Database, and the primary key column is ID
I'm close to retiring from the Air Force and will be settling down in Seattle with my beautiful wife and 3 year old daughter. Naturally I'm a little anxious about the transition and trying to prepare for it... After living financiallly modest ($35k/a year) thoughout my 20 year military career, I want my second career pay in the IT-field to hopefully reach the six figures range (mainly to repay my wife for sticking by me through all the hardships). I bring the following to the table...

Experience:
20 years AF retired (15 yrs Systems Analyst(IT) / 5 years Logistics)
5 tours in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom & Enduring Freedom
Security Clearance
NCOIC or in charge of Computer Operations
Ran an IT Helpdesk, MS applications(Excel, ACCESS, PPT,etc), Windows 9x, NT, 2000, Vista, SQL server, Active Directory, RFID, FTP, mainframes, LAN topographies and architecture, build databases with eyes closed, etc

Education:
Master of Business Administration
MS, Technology Management(specializing Information Sys & Services)
BS, Management Information Systems
AAS, Information Systems Technology

Certifications
Graduate Certificate, Project Management

With that said I have a couple of questions...
I'm looking to become an IT Manager/Director with an eventual eye on CIO. First, what kind of IT job should I be focusing on to get me in the door when I begin my IT job search in Seattle? Second, given what I'm leaving the military with (education, experience, etc) what should be a realistic pay range for me to expect to start out with?

I'm looking for employment OTHER than government-related to include Boeing, etc.

With this upcoming major transition for my family and I, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Can I get IT work form foreign Company?
What steps must I follow to reach there?

I own 40 Windows 2000 User CALs. I want to upgrade to 2003 SBS and want to know if I can bring up existing CALs with me. I'm having the hardest time determining if my existing CALs will work or if there is a path that I can upgrade them to SBS CALs. I have read that SBS CALs are different because SBS includes not only Windows 2003 Server, but also Exchange, SQL and ISA Server.

Thanks for the help!
Hi guys,

I'm setting up a sales information system, and I'm using MS SQL 2000 for my DB and PHP.. My question is, what is the best practice for server setup. Is it much faster to host the web server and the DB server on the same machine or to have them hosted on a separate machine. The system is already working fine, the codes are already optimize. Right now I'm having problem with the speed of the quiries specially for long long date ranges. thanks..
