What are J2SE Runtime Environment updates and why do I need them installed on my PC

I have hundreds of megabytes being used on my hard drive because of these J2SE updates (Ranging from update 2 - update 10) and I have no idea what these applications are doing for my system. Can somebody let me know if it's safe to uninstall these things???

What is the difference between J2SE and JAVA SE Runtime Environmnet

Installed on my PC are different JAVA names: J2SE RE 5.0 Update 11, JAVA (TM) 6 Update 7 and the JAVA (TM) SE RE 6 Update 1, i know i need to keep one, and the latest is the Version 6 Update 7. But i get me confuse, should i uninstall the version 5.0 update 11 and version 6 update 1? Will it be ok?
